A Twisted Gaze: the Change in H.P. Lovecraft's Racial Attitudes in "The Shadow over Innsmouth" This paper looks at how Howard P. Lovecraft‘s novella “The Shadow over Innsmouth” demonstrates his changing racial attitudes. The goal is to take the novella “The Shadow over Innsmouth” which was published in 1936 and analyze it through a postcolonial perspective to demonstrate the author’s changing stance on racial hybridity in the novella that contrasts the racism and ethnocentrism displayed by characters throughout the text. By using Homi K. Bhabha’s theories of mimicry and hybridity and Edward Said’s theory of Otherness a framework is set up through which the actions and reactions of the characters are analysed.
