Persuktas žvilgsnis: H. P. Lovecraft rasinio požiūrio kitimas novelėje „The Shadow over Innsmouth“

A Twisted Gaze: the Change in H.P. Lovecraft's Racial Attitudes in "The Shadow over Innsmouth" This paper looks at how Howard P. Lovecraft‘s novella “The Shadow over Innsmouth” demonstrates his changing racial attitudes. The goal is to take the novella “The Shadow over Innsmouth” which was published in 1936 and analyze it through a postcolonial perspective to demonstrate the author’s changing stance on racial hybridity in the novella that contrasts the racism and ethnocentrism displayed by characters throughout the text. By using Homi K. Bhabha’s theories of mimicry and hybridity and Edward Said’s theory of Otherness a framework is set up through which the actions and reactions of the characters are analysed. Also, the work of Gerard Kleinpenning with Louk Hagendoorn is used to further explain the terms racism and Joshua Glasgow’s work to explain ethnocentrism. Upon examination it can be understood that the novella demonstrates a breaking point of the characters as at first the main protagonist is frightened and appalled by the hybridity prevalent throughout the text only to accept his own hybrid nature at the end, which seems to tie with Lovecraft’s own changing outlook on Anglo-Saxon ethnocentrism and racism in general
